We recommend a walk that starts from the landing port of San Basilio, continues across the Ponte dell'Accademia bridge (where the Grand Canal is crossed) to St. Mark's Square (San Marco Piazza). Optionally, instead of walking, it is possible to order a water taxi ride, and later a gondola ride, lunch, and a taxi-boat through the Grand Canal. Already during arrival, on board, passengers will be given an overview of basic information about the city, excursions, meeting times, main attractions, etc.
The historic center of the city is made on 118 islands and isles. It is located in the lagoon, between the Po and the Piave rivers, on the north of the Adriatic Sea. The islands of Lido and Pellestrina divide the lagoon from the sea, leaving a narrow maritime passage. Material brought by rivers is sand, and therefore many buildings are constructed on the basis of oak trees, that were inserted in the sand and mud. It is a unique method of construction. Natural channels between the islands are further deepened to ensure the navigability. The islands are connected to one another by bridges. This is a city in the water.
Venice is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1987 and have very often had an inspiring effect on artists, and is one of the most visited cities by tourists.
The name originates from the ancient Veneti, who populated the region by the 10th century B.C. The city was historically the capital of the Venetian Republic. Writers and journalists described it as "undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man" or "one of Europe's most romantic cities".
Venice was an advanced civilization, what shows the best historical fact, that is already in year 960**, the Doge of Venice Pietro IV Candiana on the National Assembly approved a law prohibiting the slave trade.
Architectural style is rich and diverse. There are, between many others, famous attractions like St Mark's Basilica and the Piazza San Marco, the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge. Also, there are famous museums and galleries, like Cà Pesaro Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Oriental Art, Peggy Guggenheim Museum-Venice, and many others.
In fashion and shopping, Venice is also important center in Italy. There are Louis Vuitton, Prada, D&G, Zegna, Armani, etc. flagship stores, and also many others. And along less luxurious shopping streets, you will also find many chic textile bargains. For tourists, the most favorite are products of Murano glass and carnival masks.
